April 28, 2005 Assemblyman Michael Patrick Carroll Endorses Bret Schundler for Governor
(MOUNTAINSIDE, NJ) -- Assemblyman Michael Patrick Carroll of Morris County today endorsed Bret Schundler for Governor, and released this statement:
"Four years ago, the McGreevey Democrats campaigned on the promise to change the way Trenton did business. That promise -- alone among their campaign promises -- they kept; they made matters infinitely worse. They unconstitutionally borrowed billions, spent without restraint, raised virtually every tax and every fee. They lavished state funds upon political cronies and presided over unprecedented waste, fraud, and outright criminality. They appointed unqualified political hacks or "friends" to positions of authority, abused power, and made New Jersey a national laughing stock.
"On their watch, taxes -- especially property taxes -- skyrocketed, spending ballooned outrageously, and an aura of corruption settled over the state.
"Indeed, this Democratic Administration seemed, at times, little more than a full employment program for the United States Attorney.
"Comes now Jon Corzine who, like McGreevey, ominously promises "...to change the way Trenton does business". This promise we can count upon the Democrats to keep, to the detriment of New Jersey taxpayers.
"Corzine ranks as perhaps the most liberal member of the US Senate. He repeatedly casts votes to increase the size of the federal government to the great detriment of New Jersey residents. New Jersey taxpayers receive little in the way of resulting benefits, but get stuck with a disproportionate share of the tax bill. Jon Corzine may be the best Senator from New Jersey for which anyone from Mississippi could hope.
"New Jersey needs a thoughtful Governor with executive experience in government, one who understands that taxes are already too high, that government is too large, and that only real spending restraint can produce real property tax reform. One who understands that our property taxes are not too high because other taxes are too low, but because government is too large and spending is out of control.
"I have carefully considered the qualifications of each of the Republican candidates for Governor. It goes without saying that each of them stands head and shoulders above the presumptive Democratic nominee. Based upon this careful review, I conclude that Bret Schundler represents the best hope of victory in the Fall and of resulting true reform.
"Bret Schundler's proposal for property tax reform does not rely upon gimmicky rebate schemes which, as we just saw this year, the Democrats divert to other purposes. Instead, it recognizes that out of control spending lies at the root of our property tax crisis. It recognizes, and attempts to correct, much of the unfair distribution of property tax relief funds. It prevents powerful legislators -- and, just as importantly, the Courts -- from favoring one municipality over another. And it imposes real spending controls to prevent unrestricted growth in government.
"Bret Schundler enjoys a solid base of support among Republicans dedicated to true reform. His message resonates not only among Republican primary voters, but with every overburdened New Jersey taxpayer. He offers not only the best hope for victory in the Fall, but the best possibility that such a victory will lead to a real change in the way Trenton does business.
"I, therefore, wholeheartedly and enthusiastically endorse the candidacy of Bret Schundler for Governor."
