NJN Debate: Schundler "Hands Down the Best"

(TRENTON, NJ) -- Schundler for Governor communications director Bill Pascoe -- responding to tonight's GOP gubernatorial debate on NJN -- this evening issued the following statement:

"The NJN Debate is over, and the verdict is in -- Bret Schundler was "hands down the best" on stage tonight, to use a phrase we heard repeated ad nauseam this evening.

"From the opening statement to the closing statement, whether the issue was how best to cut property taxes, how to deal with sports teams leaving New Jersey, how to deal with Camden revitalization, abortion, corruption, mental illness, campaign spending limits, a lieutenant governor for New Jersey, dual office-holding, or the Highlands Act, Bret was the clear winner.

"Bret demonstrated that the best way to permanently and dramatically reduce property taxes is to support his Permanent Property Tax Reduction Amendments. Doug Forrester, by contrast, failed to explain away why spending doubled, property taxes tripled, and debt service sextupled in West Windsor while he was Mayor -- so much so that his hometown newspaper editorialized that he and his Township Committee were "spending money like drunken sailors."

"A plan is only as good as the political leader pushing it, and a political leader can best be judged by his prior record in office. Bret Schundler cut spending and taxes while in Jersey City. The result was economic revitalization, and two reelections by massive landslides. Doug Forrester, by contrast, caused massive tax, spending, and debt increases in West Windsor, and didn"t even run for reelection after his first term as Mayor."
