June 1, 2005 Corzine? Property Tax Relief? GET REAL!
(MOUNTAINSIDE, NJ) -- Schundler for Governor communications director Bill Pascoe -- responding to the release of Jon Corzine's "REAL" property tax relief "plan" -- today issued the following statement:
"Hmm. Doug Forrester is "Mr. 30 in 3." Jon Corzine is now "Mr. 40 in 4?" I guess if Joe Piscopo WERE running for Governor, he"d be "Mr. 50 in 5?" GET REAL!
"Let's take just a quick look at Mr. Corzine's "plan," shall we?
"Mr. Corzine says his plan is "responsible," because his plan will "grow state revenues from a growing economy, and cut spending." Jon Corzine -- rated by the National Taxpayers Union as the SINGLE BIGGEST SPENDER IN THE ENTIRE UNITED STATES SENATE -- is going to "cut spending?" GET REAL!
"Jon Corzine -- who has voted for higher taxes 132 times in just five years in the Senate (do the math -- roughly 260 weeks in the U.S. Senate, divided by 132 votes for higher taxes, means that, on average, every time you open your biweekly paycheck, Jon Corzine just voted for higher taxes!) -- is going to do this "without raising other taxes"? GET REAL!
"Mr. Corzine says his plan is "effective," because "rebates are guaranteed to grow at least 10% per year -- that's 40% over four years." Actually, a 10% increase compounded annually for four years is 46% and not 40%, but what's 6% among friends? "40 in 4" is a great marketing slogan -- poll-driven, focus-group-tested -- and it sounds vaguely like another sham marketing slogan I"ve heard recently. Hmm. Yeah, that's the ticket -- Jon Corzine has seen Doug Forrester's ante and raised him 10%, I guess. GET REAL!
"Mr. Corzine says his plan is "accountable," and that he will "end the "corruption tax" at the local level." The guy who put a million bucks in George Norcross's pocket is going to end the corruption tax? The guy who was business partners with Charlie Kushner is going to end the corruption tax? The guy who put his arm around Jim McGreevey and said he was "proud" that Jim McGreevey was "my Governor" is going to end the corruption tax? GET REAL!
"Mr. Corzine says his plan is "lasting," because he wants a "Citizens Property Tax Convention." But as we all know, the property tax convention doesn"t address the spending side of the equation -- it's limited by statute to addressing new ways to RAISE TAXES. GET REAL!
"Neither Jon Corzine's plan NOR Doug Forrester's plan actually addresses PROPERTY TAXES. Instead, they both involve shuffling money around at the state level, without ever doing anything to actually REDUCE PROPERTY TAXES. Like a game of three-card monte, it's just so much more sham.
"If New Jersey's property taxpayers want to GET REAL about reducing their property taxes, there's one plan, and one man, they can vote for -- BRET SCHUNDLER."
